On Saturday, 8 August 2009 the US Supreme Court appointed the first Hispanic and the third women in its 220-year history to sit as a supreme court judge. The appointment symbolised another definitive moment in American history and one that can be seen as a closer step to the 'Obama-style America'.

At a celebratory party at the White House today, Justice Sotomayor spoke about her unlikely path to achievement. She said, "It is our nation's faith in a more perfect union that allows a Puerto Rican girl from the Bronx to stand here now. I am struck again today by the wonder of my own life and the life we in America are so privileged to lead."
